Footballer Diarra ordered to pay £10m fine to former club

France

French footballer Lassana Diarra has been ordered by the Court of Arbitration for Sports, to pay a 10 million euro fine to his former club Lokomotiv Moscow for breach of contact.

The 31-year-old midfielder breached his four-year contract when he left the Russian side in 2014 having joined the club the previous year.

The Russian club filed a complaint to the world governing football body FIFA soon after Diarra left the club.

The Court of Arbitration also upheld a 15-month ban and a salary suspension, both of which Diarra has already served.

Soon after the decision, the footballer took to social media saying: “I take note today of notification from CAS of the punishment concerning me. It boils down to 15 months match suspension (already served), 15 months salary suspension (already served), 110,000 euros for the benefit of CAS, 10million euro fine.”

“I accept the situation as I have always done in the past. I thank those who supported me during this difficult time and as I said it’s something I wouldn’t wish on any other player,” he added.

Diarra, now with French club Marseille, left Lokomotiv after having his salary cut. He was recently named in France’s Euro 2016 squad.
